Across the tranquil waters, Sint-Annakasteel emerges. It stands as a testament to a fascinating blend of history, ambition, and architectural brilliance. Sint-Annakasteel wasn’t always the grand structure we see today. The original building, a more modest country house, once stood a few meters away. Charles Waucquez, a wealthy textile merchant, acquired the property around 1902. He envisioned a grander residence, perfectly aligned with the Avenue de Waha. So, he commissioned architect Louis Sauvage to create the current Sint-Annakasteel. Waucquez had a keen eye for design. He was also the visionary behind the Old England building in Brussels, now the Belgian Comic Strip Center. This demonstrates his diverse tastes, embracing both Art Nouveau and classicism. The Sint-Annakasteel’s construction in 1902 reflects this classicism. The white stone facade, the imposing entrance, and the surrounding gardens evoke a sense of timeless elegance. The château’s history continued to unfold through family ties and inheritance. Upon Waucquez’s death, his widow lent the property to their grandson, Jacques Pastur. Jacques served as a lieutenant colonel in the Belgian Air Force. He later married Lady Elizabeth Bowling-Harvey, adding an aristocratic link to Sint-Annakasteel’s lineage. In 1959, the Belgian state acquired Sint-Annakasteel. It served as a venue for the Maison Européenne de Val Duchesse. This organization fostered cultural exchange among European Community members, NATO representatives, and diplomats. Finally, in 1996, Sint-Annakasteel was sold to the Royal International Club Château Sainte-Anne, its current owner. Today, this exclusive club maintains the property, preserving its legacy for its members. The Sint-Annakasteel’s journey, from a simple country house to a private club, mirrors the evolving landscape of Auderghem and Brussels. It stands as a quiet sentinel, witnessing the passage of time and the changing tides of history.
