Founded in 1899, the Singhalese Sports Club emerged from a combined school cricket team. Players came mainly from Royal College and S. Thomas’ College. They defeated Colts Cricket Club by a single run. This victory sparked the idea to establish the Singhalese Sports Club.

Initially, the club leased land in Victoria Park. The soil was sandy, and cinnamon trees dotted the landscape. Over time, the land was leveled creating a cricket ground. In 1952, the club moved to its present location in Maitland Place.

The Singhalese Sports Club has a long list of distinguished presidents. Three former Prime Ministers of Sri Lanka held this position. Sir Harry Dias was the first president serving from 1899 to 1901.

The Singhalese Sports Club has an impressive record in Sri Lankan domestic cricket. It has won the Premier Trophy a record 32 times. In 2009, the club achieved a historic triple championship. It won all three major tournaments in one year.

Many famous cricketers have graced the grounds of the Singhalese Sports Club. Mahela Jayawardena and Thilan Samaraweera are among the notable players. Arjuna Ranatunga also played here.

The Singhalese Sports Club is not just about cricket. It offers a range of sporting facilities. These include swimming pools, tennis courts, and a gymnasium. The club has over 7000 members.

The Singhalese Sports Club also boasts a restaurant and a Centenary Bar. The Centenary Bar maintains a dress code.
