Founded in 1899 by John Simmons a wealthy clothing manufacturer Simmons University stands proudly in Boston. It began as Simmons College a women’s college. John Simmons believed women deserved a liberal arts education. This would empower them to live independently and succeed in professional life. Sarah Louise Arnold the school’s first dean championed this vision. She later became the national president of the Girl Scouts.
Simmons wasn’t just about academics. It embraced progress and inclusion. It was one of the few private colleges that didn’t impose quotas on Jewish students during the first half of the 20th century. In 1914 Simmons graduated its first African American student a landmark moment in its history. In 2014 Simmons explicitly welcomed transgender students. It declared a strong commitment to empowering women and challenging traditional gender roles. This made Simmons the third women-centered college to accept transgender women.
Today Simmons University is a vibrant institution. It offers undergraduate and graduate programs. The undergraduate program remains women-focused. The graduate programs are co-educational. The university’s MBA program was the first in the world designed specifically for women. In 2018 Simmons College transitioned to Simmons University reflecting its expanded offerings.
The university boasts a diverse student body. Popular undergraduate majors include nursing exercise science and communications. Simmons is also renowned for its study abroad programs. Students have access to more than ninety opportunities. These include year-long semester-long programs and internships. All first-year students receive financial assistance. This includes merit-based scholarships worth up to $27000. Transfer students can also receive scholarships ranging from $7000 to $17000. Annual traditions such as the Simmons Soiree and Shark Week foster school spirit. The mascot of Simmons is the Shark. The colors are blue and yellow.

The campus is currently undergoing a major transformation with the One Simmons project. This plan aims to unite the two campuses into a single state-of-the-art facility.
