Hidden in plain sight, the Silver Street & Mill Lane Site hums with a quiet energy. This University of Cambridge site, nestled between Silver Street, Trumpington Street, Little St Mary’s Lane, and the River Cam, often gets overlooked. But it holds a fascinating history intertwined with the city itself. The Silver Street & Mill Lane Site isn’t just one building. It’s a collection of university departments, facilities, and even the University Centre. Mill Lane cuts right through the heart of this site, a path trodden by countless students and academics. Before it housed lecture halls and laboratories, this area played a different role. Silver Street itself was once known as Small Bridges Street. This name, dating back to before 1615, hinted at a second branch of the River Cam nearby, requiring two small bridges. These bridges, maintained by a hermit and connected to a small chapel, served as a vital link. Imagine travelers crossing these bridges, contributing to the hermit’s upkeep, and pausing for prayer. This tradition, recorded in the 1396 register of the Bishops of Ely, continued until 1549. Though the exact location of the hermitage and chapel remains a mystery, they paint a vivid picture of life along the Cam. The Silver Street Bridge we see today, while not one of the original “small bridges,” also boasts a rich past. Built in 1841 to replace a dilapidated predecessor, the 19th-century bridge couldn’t withstand the test of time. Declared unsafe in 1913 and further weakened by the 1947 floods, it eventually gave way to the current structure. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and completed in 1959, the modern Silver Street Bridge stands as a testament to architectural evolution. The Silver Street & Mill Lane Site and its surrounding streets hold more than just academic pursuits. They whisper tales of hermits, vanished bridges, and the constant flow of the Cam. Next time you find yourselves here, take a moment to appreciate the layers of history beneath your feet. You’re walking on ground shaped by centuries of Cambridge life.
