The Silent Sentry, a towering bronze statue, stands sentinel in Laurel Hill Cemetery. It marks the resting place of the Soldiers’ Home of Philadelphia, where countless Civil War veterans and their families found solace. This majestic figure, forged in 1883, was originally placed at Mount Moriah Cemetery, another historic landmark in the area. However, it faced a tragic fate and was stolen by thieves. Luckily, the statue was recovered and then, in 2013, found a new home at Laurel Hill Cemetery in a symbolic rededication ceremony. The Silent Sentry, now guarded with watchful eyes, stands at parade rest, a silent testament to the sacrifices made by those who served in the nation’s darkest hour.
