What glitters beneath the wings of a passing airplane? It’s the Silbersee in Langenhagen, just outside Hanover. Pilots soaring above reportedly gave the lake its name. They noticed its silvery gleam as the sun reflected off the water. The Silbersee isn’t a natural lake. It was born from a construction project. In the 1930s, crews dug out gravel here to build the Hanover-Magdeburg-Berlin Autobahn. This left a large pit, which eventually filled with water. This newly formed lake, reaching depths of up to 15 meters, quickly became a local favorite. In the 1950s, the community transformed the Silbersee into a proper bathing area. They added a swimming pool with a diving platform, fenced it in, and charged admission during the swimming season. There was even a restaurant on the west bank, the Silbersee-Gaststätte. Locals would gather there for family celebrations, even when the swimming season was over. Over time, the admission fees were dropped. The Silbersee came under the watchful eye of the German Life-Saving Society (DLRG). You can still see their watch station on the west bank. It’s topped with an observation tower, a relic from Hanover’s Aegidientorplatz. DLRG lifeguards are on duty on weekends, sunny days, and during school holidays. They are there to ensure the safety of all visitors enjoying the Silbersee. Between 2003 and 2008 alone, they rescued 16 people from drowning. The Silbersee has also become a haven for recreation beyond swimming. In the 1980s, playgrounds and a mini-golf course were added. A restaurant and a kiosk with a beer garden offer refreshments. Restrooms and designated shallow water zones with sandy beaches and sunbathing lawns make the Silbersee ideal for a relaxing day out. The Silbersee has seen its share of challenges. In the past, algal blooms and issues with blue-green algae and cercariae sometimes impacted water quality. However, recent measurements indicate improvements. The water quality of the Silbersee has consistently received high ratings according to European guidelines since 1991. Today, the Silbersee continues to draw visitors from all around. With its fenced-in dog beach on the southern shore, it’s a particular favorite among dog owners. The Silbersee offers something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a refreshing swim, a leisurely afternoon of mini-golf, or simply a peaceful spot to enjoy the sunshine, the Silbersee welcomes you.
