Haven’t you noticed the peaceful atmosphere around the Sikh Center of NY? It stands as a beacon of Sikhism in Queens. Let’s explore its story.

The Sikh Center of NY was established in 1972. It emerged from a growing Sikh immigrant community from Punjab India. Today it is one of five Sikh centers in Queens. Hardev Singh Padda manages this center and another location in Queens Village.

Many original members were immigrants from Punjab. Many did not speak English. Now younger members are first-generation Americans. They are raised bilingual. About 1500 congregants attend. The Center’s president notes that its population has remained steady for 25 years. Members come from all over Queens. Weekend services draw people from as far as the Bronx.

Many work hard as construction workers or taxi drivers. They want their children to attend college. Often their children achieve successful careers. The Sikh Center of NY serves more than just a religious purpose.

The main floor sanctuary is the heart of spiritual life. Religious services occur here. Weddings birthdays and holidays are celebrated in this room. The sanctuary opens at 4 AM for morning services. It closes at 9 PM after evening services. Saturdays and Sundays are busiest. Services run from 10 AM to 4 PM on those days. Many members attend only on weekends.

The Sikh Center of NY also supports its community. The top floor has a Saturday/Sunday school. Sixty young members learn Punjabi here. Volunteers teach free classes. Rooms on the upper level offer free sleeping arrangements. These are for new immigrants or those in need. In 1998 a middle-aged immigrant found help here. A friend referred him to the Sikh Center of NY. He got free lodging allowing him to find work and adjust to a new country.

The Sikh Center of NY’s basement serves the wider Flushing community. Sikhs and non-Sikhs are welcome. Three free vegetarian meals are offered daily. Anyone can enter and eat regardless of religion. Meals are cooked on site. Members donate eighty percent of the langar. The institution pays for the other twenty percent. Volunteers run a charity. This charity aids new immigrants. It provides relief for communities in need worldwide.

Beyond religion and service the Sikh Center of NY helps members connect. It assists Sikh immigrants in finding jobs. There are plans to expand the building. This will accommodate congregants’ spiritual social and economic needs. It truly embodies Sikh values.

The Sikh Center of NY stands as more than a religious institution. It is a community hub. It is a place of support and a testament to Sikh values.
