“Four Seasons Green” is what Sijiqing means. It is more than just a name. It’s a story of transformation. Today we explore Sijiqing in Beijing, a place that has reinvented itself over the decades.

Sijiqing’s story begins in the 1950s. Back then, it was all about agriculture. Picture a collection of small farms. They later united to form something bigger. This was the Sijiqing People’s Commune. The name “Four Seasons Green” came from a greenhouse production cooperative. This symbolizes growth and renewal.

In 1958, eight agricultural cooperatives joined forces. This marked a significant step in Sijiqing’s development. A year later, Jushang Farm became part of the team. These early days shaped the community’s identity.

The area evolved over time. In 1983, Sijiqing transformed into a township. Then in 2004, it became a town. Finally, in 2011, Sijiqing gained area status. Yet it retained its identity as a town. These changes reflect China’s broader economic reforms.

Sijiqing is located in the Haidian District of Beijing. It borders several subdistricts and areas. These include Wanliu, Xiangshan and Qinglongqiao to the north. Shuguang lies to the east. Tiancun Road is to the south. Bajiao, Pingguoyuan and Wulituo are to the west. Its location has always been key to its growth.

By 2020, Sijiqing had a population of 162,700. That is a density of 4,000 people per square kilometer. The area covers 40.82 square kilometers. This makes Sijiqing a vibrant and bustling part of Beijing.

Administratively, Sijiqing is divided into 24 subdivisions. These include 12 communities. There are also 10 villages and 2 residential areas. Each subdivision has its own unique character. Some notable communities include Mentoucun, Jushan Jiayuan and Changqingyuan. Villages like Tiancun, Baoshan and Zhenxing add to the diverse makeup.

Sijiqing isn’t just about numbers. It’s a living, breathing community. Young women in the 1960s faced unique challenges here. They navigated Communist Party policies during the Great Famine and the Cultural Revolution. Their stories reveal resilience and adaptability. Oral histories capture their experiences. They show how these women coped with adversity. They also highlight the Party’s impact on their lives.

Memorial sites add another layer to Sijiqing’s identity. Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall and Li Dazhao Martyr Cemetery are significant landmarks. Cao Xueqin Memorial Hall also stands as a cultural beacon. These sites connect Sijiqing to pivotal moments in Chinese history.

Today, Sijiqing continues to evolve. It balances its historical roots with modern development. The name “Four Seasons Green” reminds us of its agricultural past. It also inspires its future growth.
