Perhaps you’ve heard whispers of a forgotten sentinel. Here in the Corvetto area stands El Signurun de Milan. This statue of Christ the Redeemer isn’t as famous as its counterpart in Rio de Janeiro. Yet, it holds a unique place in the hearts of the locals.

El Signurun welcomes those entering Milan. Its presence is a comforting embrace. But its story has a few unexpected turns.

Picture El Signurun in via San Dionigi. The statue stands on a building’s terrace. It’s as if it is on the prow of a ship. This three-meter-high statue made of cement and grit is a piece of old Milan.

The statue has seen better days. Time and accidents have left their mark.

Once upon a time, El Signurun had two hands. But during the replacement of a lamppost, a mishap occurred. A construction vehicle severed the right hand. Locals say a police officer recovered it. Some claim it was given to a local priest.

The hand was eventually reattached in 2020 after having been damaged during public works. This was thanks to the efforts of Chiara Perazzi and Romano Saini. The statue isn’t officially recognized. Its origins are mysterious. Antonio Mendola restored the hand.

There’s a legend connected to the waterway Vettabbia. Before it was covered, it flowed where the road is now. They say the statue was discovered in its waters. Centuries ago, El Signurun greeted pilgrims. They were on their way to Chiaravalle Abbey. It welcomed travelers to the city.

The terrace upon which El Signurun stands had a different view in the past. It overlooked the Vettabbia. Now, the building sits on a border. Odd-numbered addresses are in one district. Even-numbered ones are in another.

Many consider the restoration imperfect. But the statue retains its charm. At its base, you’ll often find candles and flowers. They’re left by those who cherish this hidden monument.

El Signurun de Milan might not be on typical tourist routes. But it offers a glimpse into a different side of Milan. It is a Milan of devotion and history. It stands as a reminder of the city’s forgotten corners.

So, take a moment to appreciate El Signurun. It is a symbol of resilience. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of Milan. It is a piece of history. It continues to watch over the city.
