Soaring above us is the Signature Bridge. It’s more than just a bridge. It’s a statement. Have you ever wondered what makes this bridge so special?

The Signature Bridge graces the Delhi skyline. It connects Wazirabad to East Delhi over the Yamuna River. Think of it as a modern gateway. It links communities and eases traffic.

Imagine a tragic event. In 1997, a school bus accident took the lives of 28 students on the old Wazirabad bridge. This spurred plans for a safer, wider bridge nearby. The Signature Bridge is the result of that vision. It reduces congestion and prevents future tragedies.

The bridge construction faced many hurdles. It started in 2008. It was finally inaugurated on November 4, 2018, by Arvind Kejriwal. He was the Chief Minister of Delhi then. The Signature Bridge missed several deadlines. The AAP government took charge in 2015 to complete it.

The Signature Bridge is India’s first asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge. Its design resembles the Namaskar Mudra, a traditional Indian greeting. The bridge’s pylon is Delhi’s tallest structure. At 165 meters, it’s double the height of the Qutub Minar.

It’s a cantilever spar cable-stayed bridge. This design balances the bridge’s weight. Cables connect to a single point on the deck. The inclined columns bend midway. This supports the bridge’s structure.

The Signature Bridge spans 675 meters in length and 35.2 meters in width. It features an eight-lane carriageway. This significantly reduces travel time. The bridge connects the Outer Ring Road and Wazirabad Road. Traveling to Ghaziabad is now 30 minutes faster.

The Signature Bridge has a 154-meter-high glass viewing box. Sadly, it is not yet open to the public due to old Indian laws. These laws govern the operation of inclined lifts.

But even without the viewing box, the Signature Bridge is a major attraction. It has become a famous spot for tourists. It also helps the local economy. People come from all over to see this iconic structure.

The Signature Bridge boasts impressive engineering. It has 127 back-stay cables. It also features spherical bearings with a 17,300-tonne vertical capacity. The bridge also has pendulum bearings that resist uplift. These bearings can withstand 6,300 tonnes.

The Signature Bridge project included more than just the bridge itself. There is a 1.8 km long approach ramp in the east. A 1.5 km long structure connects to Delhi’s outer ring road in the west. The entire infrastructure project spans six kilometers. It also features a new bicycle path.

The Signature Bridge is more than steel and concrete. It represents progress. It embodies Delhi’s spirit. It is a symbol that inspires awe and wonder. As you stand here, remember the vision that brought this landmark to life.
