Across the expanse of Sighthill Park, a unique monument beckons. The Sighthill Stone Circle stands as a modern marvel inspired by ancient traditions. Completed in 1979, the Sighthill Stone Circle wasn’t simply a replica of ancient sites like Stonehenge. It was meticulously designed by Duncan Lunan, an astronomer and science-fiction writer. He ensured each of the seventeen stones aligned with the sun and stars specific to this location. This makes Sighthill Stone Circle the first astronomically aligned stone circle built in Britain in over 3,000 years. The circle’s central stone weighs a massive four tons. It is encircled by sixteen smaller stones. Originally situated near a former chemical factory overlooking the motorway, the Sighthill Stone Circle found a new home in 2019. Relocated about 200 meters from its original position, the stones were carefully realigned. This was done after a major regeneration project in Sighthill. The project was overseen by Duncan Lunan himself, ensuring the circle’s astronomical integrity. The new site offers a clearer view. The surrounding landscape complements this modern homage to ancient astronomy. Sighthill Stone Circle reminds us of humanity’s enduring fascination with the cosmos.
