High above the city Sierra Towers stands tall. Its sleek lines cut against the Los Angeles sky. This isn’t just a building. It’s a legend.

Sierra Towers a 31-story residential high-rise in West Hollywood has captivated the city for decades. Designed by Jack A Charney this architectural marvel opened in 1965. It was originally known as the Spoon Apartment Building.

The Minskoff brothers Walter and Leo developed Sierra Towers. Their family also built New York’s Minskoff Theatre. Construction cost a staggering $12 million in 1965. That’s over $88 million today. The building is unusually tall for its location. It’s taller than any other building within a two-mile radius. Its position at the base of a hill makes it the highest residential tower in the greater Los Angeles area relative to sea level. The name Sierra Towers is said to stem from scrapped plans for a second tower.

Sierra Towers wasn’t always condos. Initially it operated as rentals. In 1974 Helmsley Spear Inc purchased the building converting it into condominiums. Since then it’s become home to a dazzling array of celebrities.

Think Lindsay Lohan who lived there from 2006 to 2007. Or Matthew Perry until 2011. PJ Harvey occupied the 29th floor from 2003 to 2018. Lily Collins lived there until 2019. Even Cher sold her two-story condo there in 2013 for $5.25 million. Sandra Bullock bought two units in 2014 and 2017. Joan Collins’s former residence sold in 2017 for $4.4 million. Courteney Cox sold her unit in 2020 for $2.9 million. Evan Metropoulos an investor bought and sold several units. He even spent $30 million combining two penthouse units. More recently Katy Perry purchased a penthouse in 2023 for $11 million.

Sierra Towers isn’t just a collection of apartments. It’s a statement a testament to luxury and exclusivity. Its iconic status in the Los Angeles skyline is undeniable. The breathtaking views the impeccable service the privacy all contribute to its legendary appeal. Sierra Towers continues to stand as a symbol of West Hollywood glamour.
