Here stands the Glasgow Bridge a vital artery connecting Glasgow’s city center to Laurieston, Tradeston and Gorbals. This bridge we see today isn’t the first to grace this location. Its story is one of constant evolution meeting the needs of a growing city.
Originally known as Broomielaw Bridge, the Glasgow Bridge sits at the foot of Jamaica Street near Central Station. Many still call it the Jamaica Bridge today. The first Glasgow Bridge emerged in 1772. William Mylne designed it and John Smeaton built it.
Thomas Telford, the first president of the Institution of Civil Engineers, greatly admired its seven-arch structure. Telford replaced it in 1833 with his own design. John Gibb & Son constructed Telford’s bridge for £34,000. Charles Atherton, one of Telford’s colleagues, served as the resident engineer. Notably, it became the first bridge in Glasgow to be lit by electricity.
As Glasgow’s maritime traffic grew, Telford’s bridge needed an upgrade. Between 1895 and 1899, engineers replaced it with the wider bridge that stands before us now. They cleverly incorporated Telford’s stonework. This expansion of the arches allowed larger ships to pass underneath.
The current Glasgow Bridge is more than just a crossing. It’s a Category B listed building, a testament to its historical and architectural value. The Glasgow Bridge is not the oldest crossing. The oldest crossing was further east near the Victoria or Albert Bridge. This Glasgow Bridge has six stone arches that span the River Clyde.
The Glasgow Bridge carries the eastern arm of the A77 across the Clyde. It directs southbound traffic, working in tandem with the George V Bridge. That bridge handles the northbound A77 traffic. Glasgow Bridge provides four lanes for vehicles. This allows drivers to merge smoothly for junctions on either end.
At its northern end, the Glasgow Bridge begins at the A814 Clyde Street. On the southern end, traffic navigates a series of one-way systems. These systems weave through the grid-iron street plan of Tradeston.
Interestingly, there was a proposal for another Glasgow Bridge. The Richard Rogers Partnership designed a curved, ramped deck bridge. A cable-stayed compression arch was intended to provide another route from Broomielaw to Tradeston. Unfortunately, funding for this project was withdrawn in 2006. The Tradeston Bridge was built to serve this function.
