What if I told you, right here at Sideshows by the Seashore, you can witness the last traditional ten-in-one circus sideshow in the USA? Sideshows by the Seashore, located at 1208 Surf Avenue in Brooklyn, isn’t just a show. It’s a living, breathing piece of Coney Island history. A portal back to a time when entertainment was a bit more… bizarre. This New York City landmark building on Surf Avenue and West 12th Street, breathes the spirit of old-time Coney Island. It’s a tribute to legends like P.T. Barnum and Harry Houdini, pushing the boundaries of alternative stage acts. Here, you won’t find ordinary. You’ll find the extraordinary. Sideshows by the Seashore is a celebration of the artistry of Coney Island’s freak show culture. Inside this air-cooled theater, you’ll witness live professional sword swallowers, fire eaters, and a diverse variety of performers with unique talents. Think of it as a postmodern twist on a classic. Rooted in the roaring twenties, but with a modern sensibility. Everyone is welcome here! Sideshows by the Seashore proudly carries on a tradition that began over a century ago, when each of Coney Island’s major parks featured sideshow performances. After the devastating fire that destroyed Dreamland in 1911, its general manager, Samuel Gumpertz, incredibly opened the Dreamland Circus Sideshow on the still-smoldering ground the very next day. This act of resilience speaks volumes about the spirit of Coney Island and its enduring love for the sideshow. For over twenty years, the Dreamland Circus Sideshow served as the world’s leading example. While most sideshows featured ten acts, hence the name “ten-in-one,” Dreamland boasted up to twenty acts per performance. The tradition continued through the decades with other iconic sideshows like Hubert’s Museum and the Wonderland Circus Sideshow. By the 1970s, however, the sideshow tradition had sadly faded from Coney Island. Its revival came in 1985, thanks to Coney Island USA. They brought back the thrill of the sideshow, very much in the classic style, and it’s been thriving ever since. So step right up, and prepare to be amazed by Sideshows by the Seashore. It’s more than just a show. It’s a journey back in time, a celebration of the unusual, and a testament to the enduring spirit of Coney Island entertainment.
