Sichuan University, established in 1896 as the Sichuan Chinese and Western School, has grown into one of China’s largest and most comprehensive universities. It merged with two academies in 1902, the Jinjiang Shuyuan and the Zunjing Shuyuan. This marked a pivotal moment, transforming into the Sichuan Higher School. The university’s journey continued with name changes and mergers. It became the National Chengdu Higher Normal School in 1916. Then in 1931, it finally adopted the name National Sichuan University. After the People’s Republic of China was founded, the name was simplified to Sichuan University. In the 1950s, the university underwent restructuring, specializing in arts and sciences. This led to the formation of other institutions, like the Chengdu University of Science and Technology. Later, in 1994, Sichuan University merged with the Chengdu University of Science and Technology and the West China University of Medical Sciences. This union created Sichuan Union University, eventually reverting to Sichuan University in 1998. Today, Sichuan University stands as a beacon of learning in Western China.
