Imagine needing help right here at Chemnitz’s Zentralhaltestelle. That’s exactly why the Sicherheitspunkt exists. It is not just a building. It’s a symbol of the city’s commitment to safety and security.

The Sicherheitspunkt. It opened its doors to the public on a Tuesday morning. The location is strategic. It resides within the Galeria Kaufhof complex. Before, this very spot was a fast-food restaurant, serving burgers. In just six months, the area transformed. It became a haven for locals and tourists alike.

Why was the Sicherheitspunkt created? Well, concerns grew about safety in Chemnitz’s city center. Especially at night. Many, particularly seniors, felt uneasy due to drug crime, fights, and even knife attacks reported in the news. So, the city took action.

The Sicherheitspunkt is typically open from 3 PM to 10 PM. Each shift includes two officers from the Chemnitz Police Department. Also, two employees of the Stadtordnungsdienst. Together, they address concerns. They take reports and engage with people passing by. Up to 50,000 people pass through this area daily. This was stated by a representative of the Krieger-Immobiliengruppe. They invested a substantial six-figure sum in the renovation.

The idea for the Sicherheitspunkt arose from discussions. These were about public safety in Chemnitz. Oberbürgermeister Sven Schulze of the SPD noted the need. A visible point of contact was necessary. It would boost both safety and the feeling of security.

Polizeipräsident Carsten Kaempf confirms its positive impact. The police received many letters from citizens. These citizens expressed their support for the new resource.

Even before the Sicherheitspunkt, progress was made. An Operative Task Force was created in November 2023. It consists of 22 officers patrolling the city center. Within six weeks, they reported significant achievements. Nearly 50 arrests were made for drug-related offenses. More than 20 wanted individuals were apprehended.

Polizeipräsident Carsten Kaempf noted a decrease in drug crime. He credits it to increased law enforcement presence. He also states that the public has noticed the difference.

The upcoming European Capital of Culture year served as a motivator. Oberbürgermeister Sven Schulze stated the goal. That goal was to establish the Sicherheitspunkt well in advance. This allows time to gain experience. The goal is to ensure everything runs smoothly in 2025.

Importantly, Polizeipräsident Carsten Kaempf clarifies something. The Sicherheitspunkt is not a police station. It is a collaborative effort. Police officers and Ordnungsamt staff work together. They address safety concerns and assist the public.

So, remember the Sicherheitspunkt. It is more than just a place. It is a symbol of Chemnitz’s dedication. The dedication to creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.
