“Did those school uniforms we passed, were those their colors?” As you stand here in front of the Siasi Uesiliana Tau’ataina ‘o Tonga – Sopu ‘o Taufa, imagine the sight of those uniforms. Royal blue and white. Those are the colors of this church and often seen on the uniforms of the schools it runs. The Siasi Uesiliana Tau’ataina ‘o Tonga – Sopu ‘o Taufa represents the majority religion in Tonga. They operate on a hierarchical system. Each year the General Assembly convenes to make decisions. This church has deep roots in the history of Tonga. You see, the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga, or Siasi Uesiliana Tau’ataina ‘o Tonga as it is known in Tongan, is actually the state religion of Tonga. The royal family are prominent members, making it the only Methodist state church in the world. It rose to prominence in 1924 when Queen Salote Tupou III decided to merge the Wesleyan church with the state church at the time. The result is the church you see before you.
