Why did a group of Tongan worshippers decide to break away and establish their own church? Let’s unravel the story of the Siasi ‘o Tonga right here in Nuku’alofa. The Siasi ‘o Tonga, also known as the Church of Tonga, stands as a testament to a fascinating chapter in Tongan religious history. Established in 1929, the Siasi ‘o Tonga emerged from a disagreement. A disagreement over the unification of the Wesleyan mission and the Free Church into the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga. This newly formed church wasn’t to everyone’s liking. Those who disagreed formed the Siasi ‘o Tonga, finding a home for their beliefs and practices. Interestingly, to avoid confusion with the Free Church of Tonga, the Siasi ‘o Tonga is sometimes referred to as the “Church of the Lords.” The church has seen a succession of leaders who have shaped its journey. Following the death of its founder, Siaosi Fīnau Mīsini, in 1938, his son, Siaosi Tangata ‘o Ha’amea, took the helm. He led the Siasi ‘o Tonga until his own passing in 1960. Currently, Reverend Dr. Tu’ipulotu Lofitu Katoanga presides over the Siasi ‘o Tonga. He took on the presidency in 2012, succeeding Reverend Dr. Tevita Feke Mafi. Before his presidency, Dr. Katoanga served as the principal of Tonga College and held a position in the government’s Ministry of Education. He also served as Secretary General of the Church during Dr. Mafi’s presidency. Interestingly, Dr. Katoanga carries on a family legacy, as his father, the late Reverend Finau Katoanga, also served as president of the church. The current Secretary General is Reverend Mosese Ueleni. The Siasi ‘o Tonga continues to play a significant role in the spiritual life of its community, standing as a symbol of resilience, faith, and Tongan identity here in the heart of Nuku’alofa.
