Remember that dazzling spectacle of Follies? It premiered right here at the Shubert Theatre in 1972. This magnificent 2100-seat show house was a Century City landmark. It hosted Broadway’s biggest hits. A Chorus Line Les Misérables Cats and Evita graced its stage. Even the Primetime Emmy Awards found a temporary home here in 2001 after the September 11 attacks. The Shrine Auditorium was unavailable. The Shubert stepped in. Can you imagine the excitement? The glamour? The sheer star power filling this very spot? Sadly the Shubert’s run was short-lived. A lack of bookings led to its closure in January 2002. October of that year brought its demolition. An office building now stands where once the footlights shone. The Shubert’s legacy however lives on in the memories of those who witnessed its brilliance. It hosted countless unforgettable performances.
