Perhaps, the most striking thing about Shuanghe is its name. Shuanghe literally translates to Two Rivers. The city owes its existence to its location between the Bortala River and the Jing River.

Today we stand in Shuanghe. Shuanghe is more than just a name. Shuanghe is a young city with a rich historical context. It is located in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region China. Shuanghe sits 30 kilometers east of Bole City. It is also 50 kilometers southwest of Alashankou near the border of Kazakhstan.

Established on February 26 2014 Shuanghe is far younger than many of the ancient cities that dot China. Its history however stretches back centuries. The name Shuanghe is not new. It dates back to the Tang Dynasty. At that time Shuanghe Dudufu an administrative division was established here in 658 AD.

Before Shuanghe became a city it was part of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps or XPCC. Shuanghe is the headquarters of the 5th Division of XPCC. Think of the XPCC as a unique organization. It has elements of both a military and a construction company. The XPCC reclaims and develops underdeveloped land. Its workers are pioneers in Xinjiang.

The leaders of Shuanghe are also the leaders of the 5th Division. This dual role is part of the division and city integration management system. Shuanghe covers a total area of 742.18 square kilometers. In 2020 the city had a population of 54731 people. This translates to about 74 people per square kilometer.

Shuanghe is divided into several administrative regions. These include one subdistrict five towns and one township-equivalent region. These divisions facilitate local governance and public service delivery.

While Shuanghe may not boast ancient temples or imperial palaces its significance lies in its modern development and strategic location. It serves as a vital hub in Xinjiang. Shuanghe supports economic growth and cross-border trade. As we look around us let us appreciate the spirit of innovation and progress that defines Shuanghe.
