Could a crescent moon atop a Hindu temple be a sign of peace? Here at the Shri Yatiraj Hanuman Mandir, it certainly seems so. This ancient temple, nestled in the heart of Delhi’s bustling Connaught Place, holds a story as vibrant as the city itself. The Shri Yatiraj Hanuman Mandir is believed to be one of five temples dating back to the Mahabharata era. Legend says it was built by the Pandavas after their victory in the Kurukshetra war. The temple houses a unique, self-manifested idol of Bala Hanuman, Hanuman as a child. He holds a gada in his left hand, his right hand resting in prayer across his chest. The idol faces south, a unique feature. Devotees can only see one of Hanuman’s eyes, adding to the mystique. The temple’s history intertwines with the Mughal period. It’s said that the poet Tulsidas, author of the Hanuman Chalisa, visited this very Shri Yatiraj Hanuman Mandir. He performed a miracle before the Mughal Emperor, who, impressed, gifted the temple a crescent moon finial for its spire. This symbol, unusual for a Hindu temple, is believed to have protected the Shri Yatiraj Hanuman Mandir from destruction during various invasions. Inside, silver-plated doors depict scenes from the Ramayana. The ceiling of the main hall is adorned with colorful paintings depicting the epic tale. Verses from Tulsidas’s Sundar Kand are etched onto marble tablets. In recent times, shrines to Shiva, Parvati, Durga, Lakshmi Narayan, Ganesha, and Santoshi Mata have been added to the complex. The Shri Yatiraj Hanuman Mandir stands as a testament to resilience and peaceful coexistence. The continuous chanting of “Sri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram” within its walls adds to the spiritual atmosphere. It is a vibrant hub of faith in the middle of a modern metropolis.
