Seventeen businessmen. A shared vision. The Shri Ram College of Commerce story begins in 1920. Driven by a desire to elevate business education, these visionaries, led by Sir Shri Ram, established the Commercial Education Trust. This trust laid the cornerstone for what would become one of India’s premier institutions, the Shri Ram College of Commerce. The journey began humbly. The first classes were held on the first floor of a hall near St. James’ Church at Kashmere Gate. Twelve students and four faculty members marked the inaugural cohort, learning in a rented bungalow in Darya Ganj. In 1926, the college formally affiliated with the University of Delhi, marking a significant step in its growth. The college’s evolution continued. It achieved degree-granting status six years later, awarding BA (Pass) degrees in the Commerce Group. The college introduced its annual magazine, “Yamuna,” in 1928, adding a literary dimension to its identity. Further academic milestones followed. The BA (Honours) and MA (Economics) programs were launched in 1943 and 1948, respectively. The Master’s in Commerce program followed soon after, expanding the horizons of the college’s academic offerings. 1951 marked a pivotal year. Celebrating its Silver Jubilee, the college refined its focus, specializing in commerce and economics. It was renamed Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) to honor its founder’s immense contributions. Three years later, SRCC found its permanent home on the North Campus of the University of Delhi. In 1957, SRCC embraced co-education, opening its doors to female students. The introduction of the BA (Honours) Economics course in 1958 completed SRCC’s undergraduate program suite. The 1960s witnessed significant infrastructural development. The Students’ Centre (now the Shridhar Shriram Auditorium), tutorial blocks, and girls’ hostel blocks were added. A unique feature for its time, a swimming pool and gymnasium were constructed, a testament to the college’s commitment to holistic student development. The iconic bust of Sir Shri Ram was installed in 1967, a permanent tribute to the college’s visionary founder. SRCC further solidified its academic reputation in 1968 with the launch of “Business Analyst,” a research journal showcasing cutting-edge work in business, management, economics, finance, and governance. The girls’ hostel, built in 1985, made SRCC the first co-educational college in the University of Delhi to offer on-campus housing for female students. Recognizing the importance of career development, the Placement Cell was established in 1996, connecting students with industry opportunities. The launch of the Post Graduate Diploma in Global Business Operations (PGDGBO) in 1999 marked SRCC’s foray into specialized postgraduate programs. The Shri Ram College of Commerce remains a testament to the vision of its founders. Its story is one of continuous evolution, marked by academic excellence, infrastructural growth, and a commitment to shaping future business leaders.
