“Ever imagined stepping back in time more than a hundred years?” I ask you. Right here stands Shri Krishna Mandir. This temple is a beacon of faith in Mumbai’s Bhuleshwar area. It is the oldest Swaminarayan Mandir in the city.
Shri Krishna Mandir is more than just a temple. It is a testament to devotion. Ranchhoddas Pranjeevandas built the first temple in 1868. He rebuilt his own residence for this sacred purpose. Acharya Maharaj Bhagwatprasadji Maharaj then instated the deities. These deities were Hari Krishna Maharaj, Gaulokvihari, and Radhika.
Now look at the tri spire structure. It was added in 1903. Acharya Maharaj Lakshmiprasadji Maharaj installed the deities of Ghanshyam Maharaj and Lakshminarayan Dev at that time. Swaminarayan’s devotee Rao Bahadur Sheth Curumsey Damjee contributed to its restoration. He used all his resources. Shree Mathurdas Vaishnav also donated generously.
Notice the elaborately carved frontage. It stands out in these surroundings. Twenty five steps lead to the audience hall. Shrines dedicated to Ganesha and Hanuman stand guard on either side. There are three main shrines inside the Shri Krishna Mandir. The shrine to the east holds idols of Hari Krishna Maharaj, Gaulokvihari and Radhika. The central shrine houses Ghanashyam Maharaj, Narayan, and Laxmi. The shrine to the west is the resting place for deities.
Above the Sabhamandap is a dome. It depicts scenes from Krishnalila. Fifty four pillars support this dome. Religious discourses are held in the large audience hall on the first floor.
Shri Krishna Mandir is a place of constant celebration. Ram Navami and Janmashtami are celebrated here. Vaman Jayanti, Nrisinha Jayanti, Mahashivratri and Ganesh Chaturthi are celebrated with devotion. The festival of Hindola during Shravan is also special.
