Who could have imagined that a Parsi gentleman’s heartfelt plea would birth the Shri Karja Devi Mata Mandir? This vibrant temple, nestled in the heart of Orlem, Malad West, Mumbai, has a story as rich as the scent of incense that fills its air. The Shri Karja Devi Mata Mandir stands as a testament to faith, community, and a surprising blend of cultures. In 1870, a wealthy Parsi landlord, possibly named Jehangir, resided in nearby Adarsh. He yearned for a child, or perhaps his wife suffered from an illness. He vowed to the local deity, Mata Karja Devi, worshipped by the Dhodia tribe who had long cultivated the land. When his prayers were answered, he built the first temple for Karja Devi. This structure boasted brick walls, stone floors, and a Kavla roof. Inside, he placed a beautifully carved murti, the very same one revered by the Dhodia community. The name “Karja Devi” itself holds a mystery. Some believe it derives from the “Karanjiya” tree, while others suggest a link to “Girija,” another name for Goddess Parvati. Over the years, Shri Karja Devi Mata Mandir became a focal point for the community. Around 1948, Makdum Ramadhin Jaiswal arrived in Mumbai and spearheaded Dahi Handi celebrations at the temple. The Lokhande and Jaiswal families continued the tradition of devotion, adding marble murtis of Shri Bajrangbali and Shri Sai Baba within the sanctum. Even a Swayambhu Shiv Ling, unearthed during construction across the street in 1989, found a home in a small temple on the Mandir grounds. The temple has always been a melting pot of faiths. Mhatres view Karja Devi as their Gramasth Devi. People from the Gurav Samaaj regularly perform pooja. Even some Mangalorean Catholics pay respects to the Naag Devta murti. The Shri Karja Devi Mata Mandir underwent a significant transformation in 2012-2013. A charitable trust, formed by devoted locals, oversaw the renovations. The result is the magnificent marble structure you see today, complete with a stunning dome, designed by Narsi Bhimji Rathod. Remarkably, people of different faiths contributed to the renovation. A Catholic, a Muslim builder, and a Sikh each played a part, showcasing the spirit of unity that defines this place. The Shri Karja Devi Mata Mandir continues to be a hub of vibrant celebrations. Navaratri, Ram Navmi, Mahashivratri, and an annual Vaarshik Mahotsav fill the temple with joyous energy. Every day, devotees gather for aarti, their lamps illuminating the faces of the deities, their offerings a fragrant testament to enduring faith. So, as you stand before the Shri Karja Devi Mata Mandir, remember the story of a Parsi gentleman’s plea. Remember the community that built and rebuilt this sacred space. Remember the diverse faiths that converge here. This temple isn’t just a place of worship; it’s a living story of faith, community, and the enduring power of hope.
