What secrets does a red temple hold, nestled against the backdrop of Delhi’s bustling Chandni Chowk? Let’s unravel the captivating story of Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir. Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir is the oldest Jain temple in Delhi. It stands proudly across from the Red Fort. This vibrant temple isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to resilience and a haven for feathered friends. Established in 1656, during Shah Jahan’s reign, Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir has witnessed centuries of history unfold. The story goes that a Jain officer in the Mughal army began by worshipping a Tirthankara statue in his tent. This humble act drew other Jain officers, leading to the construction of a temple on the very spot. The temple was initially known as “Urdu temple” due to its location in Urdu Bazaar and also as “Lashkari Mandir,” meaning “army camp temple.” A fascinating legend claims Aurangzeb banned musical instruments in the temple. Yet, the rhythmic sounds of drums miraculously continued, defying the ban. Even Aurangzeb himself witnessed this phenomenon and ultimately lifted the ban. The temple we see today, with its distinctive red sandstone spires, was primarily rebuilt in 1878, after the Mughal Empire’s decline. Inside, you’ll find shrines dedicated to Jain deities, including Lord Mahavira, the 24th and last Tirthankara. The statue of Rishabhanatha, the first Tirthankara, also graces the temple, alongside the shrine of Lord Parshvanatha. But the wonders of Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir extend beyond its sacred halls. Behind the main temple lies a unique institution: the Jain Birds Hospital. Established in 1930, it’s a testament to the Jain principle of compassion for all living beings. The hospital, built in 1957 under Acharya Deshbhushan Maharaj, treats thousands of birds every year. As you explore the temple complex, notice the Manastambha column standing tall at the entrance. Take a moment to appreciate the tranquility within the courtyard, surrounded by a colonnade. Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir is more than just a temple. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven with history, spirituality, and compassion. It serves as a poignant reminder of the power of faith and the importance of cherishing all life.
