The Shree Mahaveer Mandir is more than just a temple. It’s a significant Jain pilgrimage site. It holds immense cultural and historical importance. Its story is one of miracles and unwavering faith.
Legend speaks of a Gurjar dairy farmer named Krapa Ram. His cow mysteriously produced milk only when near a mound. Intrigued villagers excavated the mound. They unearthed the iconic idol of Lord Mahavira. This statue is over 1000 years old.
Word of this miraculous discovery spread. Shri Amar Chand Bilala a Digambar Jain merchant recognized the idol’s significance. He built the magnificent temple we see today in the 17th century. The King of Jaipur initially opposed this but miraculously the idol prevented his interference.
The main temple’s architecture is breathtaking. It’s a blend of marble and red sandstone. The style is Nagara. Intricate carvings and golden paintings adorn the walls. They depict scenes from Mahavira’s life. Sixteen mythological scenes grace the exterior walls. A towering 52-foot marble Manastambha stands proudly at the entrance.
The main statue of Lord Mahavira is nearly 78 centimeters high. It’s carved from sandstone. The Lord is depicted in the padmasana posture. The temple houses additional idols of other Tirthankaras.
Even today the Shree Mahaveer Mandir continues to serve the community. The temple trust offers a wide range of services. These include a dispensary a pharmacy a school and a library. They extend support to education cultural activities and research in the Prakrit language. A naturopathy and yoga center also operates on the premises.
An annual fair celebrates Mahavir Jayanti in April. Devotees from far and wide gather to participate in this vibrant event. The five-day fair culminates in a colorful Rath Yatra. This procession features a bullock-drawn chariot. Religious discourses and devotional songs fill the air.
