The Shree 1008 Mahavira Swami Digambar Jain Temple is more commonly known as the Lal Mandir or Red Temple. It’s the oldest and most famous Jain temple in Delhi. It sits directly across from the majestic Red Fort a powerful symbol of Mughal might. But long before the Mughal Empire this land held sacred significance for the Jain community.

The temple’s origins date back to 1656. It was a time when Emperor Shah Jahan invited Agrawal Jain merchants to settle in Old Delhi. They were granted land near Chandni Chowk. One legend tells of a Jain officer who kept a Tirthankara statue in his tent. This humble beginning gradually drew other Jain soldiers. Soon a small temple was built on this very spot. The temple also held the names Urdu Temple and Lashkari Mandir. The present buildings however were constructed later in 1878.

But the Shree 1008 Mahavira Swami Digambar Jain Temple holds more than just historical value. Its main shrine is dedicated to Lord Mahavira the 24th and last Tirthankara. The temple houses statues of other Tirthankaras. Among them Rishabhanatha the first Tirthankara and Parshvanath Mahavira’s predecessor. These statues some dating back to 1491 are treasures of artistry and devotion.

The temple complex is more than just its shrines. It boasts a unique feature a bird hospital. This avian sanctuary offers free treatment to injured birds a testament to the Jain philosophy of non-violence. This hospital has been treating thousands of birds annually for over six decades.

Imagine the scene. The golden paintwork of the shrine area shines under the soft glow of butter lamps and candles. The air is thick with the scent of incense and the murmur of prayers. This is a place of profound peace a sanctuary where devotion blends with history.
