Have you ever wondered what Porto’s oldest shopping mall holds within its walls? Shopping Center Brasília, nestled in the bustling Boavista district, whispers tales of bygone eras. Inaugurated on October 9, 1976, Shopping Center Brasília stands as a testament to Porto’s rich commercial history. It was a pioneering venture, one of the first shopping centers in Portugal. Its slogan, “An institution in the city,” speaks volumes about its enduring presence.

Shopping Center Brasília occupies a prime spot at the corner of Avenida da Boavista and Praça Mouzinho de Albuquerque. This location, also known as Rotunda da Boavista, places it within walking distance of other city landmarks. The nearby metro station, bearing the same name as the rotunda, adds to its accessibility. In the 1990s, new shopping centers sprouted across Greater Porto. This shift impacted Shopping Center Brasília’s popularity, leading to the closure of its cinema, Charlot. Yet, Shopping Center Brasília persevered.

In 2006, as Shopping Center Brasília celebrated its 30th anniversary, plans for a €12.5 million renovation surfaced. This ambitious project aimed to revitalize the shopping center and draw in more visitors. Back then, Shopping Center Brasília welcomed around 15,000 visitors daily.

The year 2023 marked a new chapter for Shopping Center Brasília. Renovation work commenced in January, backed by a €500,000 investment. Architect João Ferros spearheaded the project, focusing on innovation and sustainability. These renovations encompass enhanced lighting, removal of the central metal staircase, and the creation of a more spacious social area. Solar panels symbolize the shopping center’s commitment to sustainability.

Shopping Center Brasília boasts six floors housing approximately 250 shops, a vast parking area spanning 17,000 square meters, and diverse offerings. While many shops are currently closed, the shopping center retains its unique character. It stands out for its independent and specialized stores. These cater to a wide range of interests, from comic books and model making to gothic metal, esotericism, martial arts, philately, and numismatics. Shopping Center Brasília is more than just shops. It houses cafes, restaurants, game rooms, art galleries, a bingo hall, a disco, a gym, and even a branch of the Institute of Higher Financial and Tax Studies. It also hosts a support center for the Brazilian university, Unigran Net.

Shopping Center Brasília stands as a symbol of resilience and adaptation. It has weathered changes in the retail landscape and remains a vital part of Porto’s urban fabric. As you stroll through its corridors, remember the echoes of its past and the promise of its future.
