High above Kyoto a hidden gem awaits. Welcome to Shogunzuka.

Shogunzuka a mound on Mount Higashiyama holds a fascinating history. Emperor Kanmu buried a 2.5-meter clay statue of a lord here in 794. This act was meant to protect the newly established capital Kyoto.

More than just a burial site Shogunzuka served strategic purposes. It was a vital point in local battles and an anti-air base during World War II. The panoramic views from its peak were invaluable. Its strategic importance is reflected in the various battles fought nearby.

Today Shogunzuka offers breathtaking views of Kyoto. A large wooden terrace renovated in 2014 provides a spectacular observation deck. This deck is five times larger than Kiyomizu-dera’s teahouse. From this vantage point you can see the heart of Kyoto and its surrounding forests.

From April 2015 to September 2017 a remarkable glass tea house called Light Shelter graced Shogunzuka. Designed by Yoshioka Tokujin this artwork celebrated the Kyoto-Florence sister city relationship. Its luminous aspects changed with the seasons and time of day. This modern art piece contrasted beautifully with the historical Seiryu-den Temple nearby.

Beyond the main terrace a west observation platform provides another stunning view. The platform is metallic and older than the main terrace. A well-maintained Japanese garden completes this enchanting location. You can also see Osaka on a clear day.

The Shogunzuka mound is a testament to history. From a legendary protective statue to a modern art exhibition it continues to captivate visitors. It is largely unknown by international tourists because it’s not accessible by public transport. Yet it is a must-see location for those who seek less-traveled paths. Remember Shogunzuka a hidden treasure in Kyoto.
