Beneath the gaze of Kyoto Tower, Shobuya Pond whispers tales of centuries past. It’s a tranquil heart within the bustling city, part of the serene Shosei-en Garden. Shobuya Pond isn’t just a body of water. It’s a living testament to changing times, tied to the grand Higashi Hongan-ji Temple. Imagine this pond in the 9th century, gracing the gardens of Prince Minamoto no Toru. This was during the Heian period, a time of elegant refinement. Centuries later, in 1641, the land was gifted to Higashi Hongan-ji Temple by Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. The garden we see today, with Shobuya Pond at its center, was largely designed by Sennyo Shonin just two years later. He followed the style of Ishikawa Jozan, a master of tea ceremony and garden design. Shobuya Pond has witnessed fires and reconstructions. The fires of 1858 and 1864 destroyed many of the surrounding buildings. Yet, the pond remained, a constant amidst the turmoil. Shosei-en, including Shobuya Pond, became a National Historical Site in 1936. Today, you can stroll around Shobuya Pond, admiring the bridges and tea pavilions. Picture yourself sipping tea in Tekisui-ken or Rinchi-tei, built on the pond’s shores in 1884. Shobuya Pond reflects the changing seasons. The vibrant blooms of spring, the summer greenery, and the fiery hues of autumn all find their mirror in its still waters. Even in winter, under a blanket of snow, Shobuya Pond retains its quiet beauty. As you stand here, by Shobuya Pond, listen closely. You might just hear the whispers of history carried on the gentle breeze.
