Perhaps you did not know, Shokoku-ji is more than just a temple. It is a journey through time, a story etched in wood and stone. Founded in 1382 by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, Shokoku-ji stands as the second of Kyoto’s Five Great Zen Temples.

Imagine Kyoto in the Muromachi period. Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu envisioned a Zen center. Initial construction started in 1383. The entire complex was dedicated in 1392. Shokoku-ji quickly rose to prominence.

But like many of Kyoto’s treasures, fire has shaped Shokoku-ji’s destiny. The temple burned down in 1394. Reconstruction followed, financed by Yoshimitsu. The Onin War brought more devastation. Yet, Shokoku-ji always rose again.

Later, leaders like Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu supported reconstruction. Hideyori financed the Dharma Hall in 1605. Ieyasu donated the Sanmon in 1609. Emperor Go-Mizunoo even donated an imperial palace building. It became the Founder’s Hall. Despite these efforts, a fire in 1788 destroyed much of the temple. Only the Dharma Hall and Imperial Gate survived.

Today, Shokoku-ji is the head temple of the Rinzai sect’s Shokoku-ji School. Over 90 affiliated temples belong to this branch. These include the Golden Pavilion and Silver Pavilion.

Let’s step inside the Dharma Hall. Look up. Kano Mitsunobu’s dragon painting dominates the ceiling. This dragon symbolizes Buddhist teachings. Clap your hands. The sound reverberates, like the dragon’s thunder.

Visit the Jotenkaku Museum. It holds treasures from Shokoku-ji and its sub-temples. See art from Ginkaku-ji and Kinkaku-ji. The tea ceremony room, Muchu-an, contains timbers from the Golden Pavilion. A disturbed monk burned it down in 1950.

Consider the name, Shokoku-ji. It means a temple of one who helps the country. It reflects the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu’s vision.

Take a moment to appreciate Shokoku-ji’s enduring legacy. It has survived fires, wars, and time itself. Shokoku-ji remains a vital center for Zen Buddhism. It is a treasure trove of art and history. It is a testament to resilience.
