Venture with me into the serene hills of Fangshan District. Here lies the Shizisi Temple site a testament to Beijing’s diverse religious past. This is Beijing’s earliest church.

Shizisi Temple tells a fascinating story. It is a story of cultural exchange between China and the West. The temple has witnessed dynasties rise and fall. It reflects the ebb and flow of religious influence.

Originally a Buddhist temple named Chongsheng Temple, it was founded in 317. This transformation occurred under the Tang Emperor Taizong around 638. This happened a mere three years after Christianity officially entered China. It coincided with the start of the Tang Golden Age.

Later, the Liao Dynasty converted Chongsheng back to Buddhism in the 10th century. The Yuan Dynasty, in the 1350s, reinstated the Nestorian Church. That is when it gained the name Shizisi Temple. Finally, the Ming Dynasty rededicated the complex to Buddhism in the 16th century. Afterward, it faded into ruin.

Imagine this valley in the Tang Dynasty. Envision traders and travelers. They are spreading not only goods. But also new ideas and beliefs along the Silk Road. Nestorian Christianity a branch of the Syriac Church found fertile ground here.

The site covers a modest 200 square meters. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides. The ruins whisper tales of a once vibrant religious center.

Look around. Notice the two ancient ginkgo trees. One cypress tree stands tall. Admire the two white marble steles. There are also two turtle stones and four stone pillar bases.

These relics provide tangible links to Shizisi Temple past. The steles bear inscriptions. They recount the temple’s history.

Consider the architectural details. Sunflower patterns adorn the pillar bases. The flat flower plates measure 54 cm in diameter. They have sixteen petals carved around the disc.

Two Nestorian cross stone carvings are now housed in Nanjing Museum. These carvings offer insight into the temple’s Christian identity. One features a cross. The other a Syriac inscription. It translates to look up to him and hope for him.

In 1931, an ancient stele of Nestorianism was discovered at Shizisi Temple. To protect these relics, they were moved to Beijing Museum. Later, they were transported to Nanjing Museum.

Shizisi Temple site is more than just ruins. It represents the complexities of China. It showcases the interactions with the world beyond its borders. It is an important material evidence of Chinese and Western cultural exchanges.

The site’s historical, cultural, and artistic value is immense. The Chinese mainland’s religious and humanistic culture can be seen here. In 2006, Shizisi Temple was recognized. It was named as a national key cultural relic protection unit.

Today, you can visit Shizisi Temple. Admission is free. It is open from 8:00 to 18:00. Take bus No. 917 to Zhangfang. Then, transfer to Fangshan bus No. 38. Get off at Chechang Village. Finally, walk to the site.

As you leave Shizisi Temple consider its layered history. This small temple embodies a significant chapter. It tells of China’s engagement with global cultures. It also tells of faith and cultural exchange.
