Beneath your feet, the earth hums with centuries of devotion. We are standing before the mystical Babulnath Temple. This Shiv temple in Mumbai is not just a structure of stone but a vessel carrying the stories of ages.

Imagine this area centuries ago. A hilly terrain now known as Malabar Hill. The land belonged to Pandurang, a wealthy goldsmith. Pandurang employed a caretaker named Babul for his cattle.

One day, Babul noticed something strange. One of Pandurang’s cows, Kapila, stopped giving milk at a particular spot. Baffled, Babul reported this to Pandurang. Pandurang was intrigued.

The next day, Pandurang secretly watched Kapila. He saw her reach the same spot and empty her milk. Approaching cautiously, Pandurang discovered a large Shiva Lingam. It was here that the Shiv temple was built. This is how the Babulnath Temple got its name.

Originally consecrated in the 12th century, this Shiv temple’s Shiva Linga and idols were established by the Hindu king Bhimdev. However, time took its toll. The Shiv temple was buried and lost.

Centuries later, between 1700 and 1780, the idols were rediscovered. The first Shiv temple was then constructed around 1780.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Babulnath Temple is reminiscent of Kailash Parbat, Shiva’s abode. It stands nearly 1000 feet above sea level. From here, you can see the Arabian Sea.

Many devotees visit this Shiv temple especially on Mondays. They seek blessings from Lord Shiva. Babulnath Temple is believed to be one of the oldest temples in India. It was built around 1780.

Another significant Shiv temple in Mumbai is the Walkeshwar Temple. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Legend says that Lord Rama paused here on his way to Lanka. He built a Shiva Lingam out of sand.

The Walkeshwar Temple is known for its antique architectural style. Nearby is the Banganga Tank. It is said that Lord Rama shot an arrow here to create a source of fresh water.

Also, consider the Dhakleshwar Mahadev Temple in Mumbai. Dhakji Dadaji built it between 1830 and 1832. It is near the Mahalaxmi Temple. The Dhakleshwar Temple’s architecture is a mix of Konkan, Islamic, and Greek styles.

These Shiv temples in Mumbai are more than just places of worship. They connect us to the city’s ancient past. They remind us of the devotion and stories woven into the very fabric of Mumbai. Take a moment to appreciate the history beneath your feet. Let the spiritual aura of Babulnath Temple fill you.
