Is this the heart of Amer? This unassuming Shiv Mandir is more than just a place of worship. Local legend whispers that Amer, the town where we stand, owes its very name to this temple. It’s said that “Amer” is derived from “Ambikeshwar”, the deity to whom this temple is dedicated. The temple itself is steeped in history, its roots stretching back to the 10th century. While many claim far greater age, the truth lies closer to the time of the Kachhawa Rajputs. It is believed that a Kachhawa ruler, perhaps even the legendary Kakil Deo, discovered this sacred site. Imagine his surprise when, upon investigating a curious incident involving a cow giving milk only at a specific spot, a Shivling was unearthed. This discovery led to the construction of the Shiv Mandir we see today, a silent testament to a time when Amer was still finding its feet. Standing before its modest facade, one can’t help but feel a connection to those early days of Amer, long before the grandeur of Amber Fort graced these hills.
