Shitennoji

Whispers of ancient prayers still echo at Shitennoji. This temple is a time capsule. It takes you back to 6th-century Japan. Shitennoji is not just a temple. It is Japan’s oldest officially administered Buddhist temple. Founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, it stands as a testament to his unwavering faith. The temple’s name, Shitennoji, translates to “Temple of the Four Heavenly Kings”. These kings, Jikokuten, Zochoten, Komokuten, and Tamonten, are believed to protect the temple from harm. The iconic five-story pagoda symbolizes these guardians. Shitennoji has faced its share of trials. Fires and wars have ravaged its structures. But each time, it has risen from the ashes. Reconstructions meticulously followed the original 6th-century design. This dedication ensures Shitennoji retains its ancient charm. The Main Hall, or Kondo, houses a revered statue of Kannon Bodhisattva. This statue is said to represent Prince Shotoku himself. The Gokuraku-Jodo Garden is another highlight. It symbolizes the Pure Land of Amida Buddha. A serene pond and meticulously placed stones create a tranquil oasis. The temple grounds also hold a Treasure House. Inside, ancient Buddhist artifacts and texts whisper tales of the past. Shitennoji is not a static relic. It is a living testament to faith. It hosts the Shitennoji Temple Fair on the 21st of each month. The fair attracts crowds eager to partake in Buddhist rituals. Shitennoji stands as a beacon of resilience.
