Some historians believe he was a native son.
Shitang’s location just 50 kilometers from Chengdu made it strategically important. It became part of the Kingdom of Shu during the Three Kingdoms period. This era saw periods of prosperity and devastation. Sadly Shifang suffered greatly during the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. The death toll was staggering. Many children perished when school buildings collapsed. The tragedy left an enduring scar on the community.
Yet resilience is woven into the fabric of Shitang. Following the earthquake Shifang began its long recovery. The city was once hailed as the “Pearl of Western Sichuan”. Its economy flourished. Shifang was famous for its phosphate rock rich veins of phosphate rock and its mineral water springs. For centuries it was a center of tobacco cultivation. Its cigars were even given as tribute to emperors and Communist leaders. This reputation earned it the nickname “Hometown of the Chinese Cigar”.
This legacy continues. A revival of the cigar industry is underway. A new complex aims to produce billions of cigars annually. Modern Shifang continues to face challenges. A proposed copper and molybdenum processing plant sparked controversy and protests. Environmental concerns prevailed. The project was ultimately abandoned.
