Planning for this incredible feat of engineering began as early as 1974. However, it wasn’t until 1988 that construction actually commenced. The project was a joint effort between the National Electric Power Ministry and the People’s Government of Beijing. By 1995, the first unit of the Shisanling Pumped Storage Power Station was operational, marking a milestone in power generation technology.
The Shisanling Pumped Storage Power Station boasts an installed capacity of 800 MW. This impressive output is generated by four reversible turbines, each capable of producing 200 MW. The station works by pumping water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir. This upper reservoir, nestled in the Mang mountain, is held back by a concrete-face rock-fill dam, an impressive structure 75 meters high and 550 meters long. When energy is needed, the water is released from the upper reservoir. It flows down through penstocks to the underground power station. Inside the power station, the water rushes through the four reversible turbines, generating electricity before returning to the lower reservoir. This cycle can be repeated as needed. This lower reservoir is created by the existing Shisanling Dam, a 29-meter-high earth-fill embankment dam. The dam stretches an impressive 627 meters in length, holding back a vast reservoir. The Shisanling Pumped Storage Power Station generates approximately 1246 GWh of electricity annually. This energy helps power Beijing, supporting its ever-growing needs.
