Gazing at the rusting hulk of the Shipwreck Mediterranean Sky, one can’t help but feel a sense of melancholy. This decaying giant, half-submerged in Eleusus Bay, whispers a tale of bygone glamour and a slow, ignominious demise. The Mediterranean Sky, originally christened the City of York, began its life far from this quiet bay, in the shipyards of Newcastle, England, back in 1952. Her maiden voyage in 1953, departing from London, marked the start of a promising career ferrying passengers between London and South Africa. For years, she sailed the seas, a symbol of elegance and adventure. In 1971, she embarked on a new chapter, sold to Karageorgis Lines and rechristened the Mediterranean Sky, transitioning into a cruiseferry. However, her final voyage in August 1996, from Brindisi to Patras, proved to be a harbinger of her unfortunate end. Financial troubles plagued the company, leading to the Mediterranean Sky’s arrest in Patras in 1997. She languished there until 1999 before being towed to Eleusis, essentially abandoned. The slow decay began. In late November 2002, the inevitable happened. The Mediterranean Sky began taking on water and listing precariously. A desperate attempt to save her saw her towed to shallower waters, where she was grounded. But the damage was done. By January 2003, the once proud vessel had keeled over in Eleusus Bay, where she remains today, a poignant reminder of maritime history and the ravages of time. The Shipwreck Mediterranean Sky stands as a stark, rusting monument to a forgotten era.
