From a humble beginning in a Third Ward home, the Ship of Zion Baptist Church has navigated the currents of time and change. We stand now before its current home in Sunnyside, a testament to its enduring faith. Ship of Zion’s journey started on October 1, 1951. Reverend Harley Como, along with Jessie and Josephine Wilson and Lottie Como, established this spiritual vessel. The name, suggested by Lottie Como, perfectly captured their mission. The original location was at Conti and Roswell in the Fifth Ward. However, freeway construction forced them to relocate to Elgin Street, later renamed Beulah Street, in the Third Ward. They eventually built a white frame building on Francis Street at Milby, purchased from Mrs. Settegast. Rev. Como steered the Ship of Zion until 1971. The church has seen many captains since then. Each leader has guided the congregation through different challenges and triumphs. The church moved again due to the University of Houston’s expansion, finally anchoring at its current location on Mallow Street in 1993. A new wing was added, providing much-needed space for classrooms, offices, and a fellowship hall. The Ship of Zion has weathered storms, both literal and metaphorical. It has witnessed freeway constructions, university expansions, and the constant ebb and flow of its community. Yet, through it all, the Ship of Zion Baptist Church has remained a beacon of faith. It continues to offer spiritual guidance and community support. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the dedication of its congregation.
