Beneath the watchful gaze of ancient spirits, lies Shinmei-jinjya Shrine. Here in Kyoto, this sacred ground whispers tales of Abe no Seimei, a revered onmyōji, a master of divination and esoteric arts. Shinmei-jinjya Shrine was established in 1007 by Emperor Ichijō to honor Seimei’s memory. It rests upon the very site of Seimei’s former home, a place imbued with his mystical presence. As you approach Shinmei-jinjya Shrine, note the two torii gates. They beckon you to cross the threshold between the mundane and the sacred. Within the shrine’s embrace, a mystical well, known as Seimei-i, holds water believed to possess magical properties. Legend has it that the renowned tea master, Sen no Rikyū, drew water from this well to enhance his exquisite brews. Observe the Seimei-star, a pentacle symbolizing the five Chinese elements. This symbol, attributed to Seimei himself, adorns various parts of the shrine. Look also for the Japanese bellflower motifs. Their five petals echo the pentacle’s symbolism, a subtle reminder of the interconnectedness of all things. South of Shinmei-jinjya Shrine, you’ll find the Ichijō Modori-bashi bridge, rumored to be a gateway between the human and spiritual realms. Each year, on the autumnal equinox, the Seimei Matsuri festival fills the shrine with vibrant energy. It is a time to celebrate Seimei’s legacy and the enduring power of Shinto traditions. Shinmei-jinjya Shrine is more than just a historical site. It is a living testament to the mystical heart of Japan, where the whispers of the past mingle with the vibrant energy of the present.
