Across the Nagahori-gawa canal once stood the Shin-Fukuzaki-bashi Bridge. It wasn’t always the elegant structure we might imagine. Its story begins in 1622. A wooden bridge 35 meters long and 4 meters wide appeared. Shinsai Okada a merchant built it. He named it after himself. This original Shin-Fukuzaki-bashi Bridge connected Shinmachi and Dotonbori. These areas thrived. Shops sprung up. The bridge became a vital part of Osaka’s main shopping district.

The wooden Shin-Fukuzaki-bashi Bridge needed constant repairs. Its popularity meant constant wear and tear. In 1873 it was replaced. A German-made iron bridge took its place. This 37.1 meters long and 5.2 meters wide arched truss marvel was unusual for Osaka. It was a conversation starter.

Then in 1909 another transformation. Osaka’s first stone bridge replaced the iron one. This bridge was Western-styled. Elegant double arches graced its design. Four-leaf clovers were carved into the railings. Eight gas lamps illuminated it at night. People nicknamed it the “Eyeglasses bridge”. The reflection of its arches in the water resembled a pair of spectacles.

However the canal’s fate was sealed. In 1964 the Nagahori-gawa canal was filled in. The Shin-Fukuzaki-bashi Bridge became an overpass. Its carved railings and lamps found new life. They were used for a pedestrian overpass. This overpass even appeared in the 1989 Hollywood movie Black Rain.

The overpass had a limited life. The Crysta Nagahori an underground shopping mall was constructed. The overpass was removed. Some railings and lamps found a final resting place. They became part of a new sidewalk bridge above the mall. Water flows in the mall’s ceiling beneath this bridge a subtle echo of the canal.

The original German-made iron bridge wasn’t forgotten. In 1973 it was reconstructed. It now resides in Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park a testament to its enduring charm. The Shin-Fukuzaki-bashi Bridge’s journey reflects Osaka’s evolution. Each iteration tells a story of commerce progress and ingenuity. This bridge’s legacy continues to shape Osaka’s identity.
