Dive into a tale of artistry and history right here at Shimoyamato-bashi Bridge. This bridge isn’t just a way to cross. It’s a portal to Osaka’s past. The Shimoyamato-bashi Bridge has a story immortalized in art.

Let’s step back to the Edo period. Imagine Osaka around the early 1860s. This was the time of Yoshitaki, a talented artist. He captured the essence of Osaka in his woodblock prints. His work is now known as nishiki-e.

Yoshitaki created a series called One Hundred Views of Osaka or Naniwa hyakkei. Within this series, he depicted the Yamato-bashi Bridge in Sumiyoshi. Today it is known as Shimoyamato-bashi Bridge. His print showcases the bridge’s importance and beauty.

The original print is a vertical chūban. It measures about 24.5 x 17.8 cm. Ink and color bring the scene to life on paper. The artwork is now part of the William Sturgis Bigelow Collection. It resides in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Bigelow acquired the print before 1911. He then gifted it to the museum.

Think about Bigelow living in Japan from 1882 to 1889. He gathered many Asian artworks during this time. His collection reflects his appreciation for Japanese culture.

Yoshitaki’s signature is on the print. It reads Yoshitaki hitsu. This confirms his authorship and artistic skill. The print appears in several catalogues raisonnés. These include Kitagawa’s catalogue and the Osaka Castle Museum’s special exhibition.

Shimoyamato-bashi Bridge stood then as it stands now. It is a link between places and times. It connects us to the traditions of Osaka.
