Aoi Matsuri’s vibrant procession begins here. Shimogamo Shrine stands before you. This isn’t just any shrine. It’s one of Japan’s oldest Shinto sanctuaries. Its formal name is Kamo-mioya Shrine. It’s a testament to enduring faith.

Shimogamo Shrine holds a revered place in Kyoto’s history. It’s even older than Kyoto itself. The shrine dates back to the 6th century. That’s centuries before Kyoto became Japan’s capital in 794. The shrine played a vital role in protecting the city. It protected Kyoto from malign influences. It served as one of the two chief shrines for the former Yamashiro Province.

The shrine’s name isn’t arbitrary. It references the Kamo family of deities. These kami are venerated here. The name also refers to the shrine’s surrounding woods. These woods are remnants of the ancient Tadasu no Mori. This forest was known as the “Forest Where Lies Are Revealed”. Many members of the Kamo clan still live near the shrine. They are descendants of those who traditionally served the shrine.

Shimogamo Shrine is dedicated to Tamayori-hime. She is known as the “spirit-inviting maiden”. Her father Kamo Taketsunomi is also venerated. Tamayori-hime is the mother of Kamo Wakeikazuchi. He is the thunder god of Kamo. His father was Honoikazuchi-no-mikoto the God of Fire and Thunder. Kamigamo Shrine the other Kamo shrine is dedicated to Kamo Wakeikazuchi.

Throughout history emperors visited Shimogamo Shrine. Emperor Kanmu visited in 794. Emperor Suzaku visited in 942 to give thanks for peace. Emperor Horikawa visited in 1088. These visits highlight the shrine’s importance. It was a key site of imperial patronage.

From 1871 to 1946 Shimogamo Shrine was designated a Kanpei-taisha. This was the highest rank of government-supported shrines. Today the shrine remains extremely popular. It is especially popular during New Year’s. The ancient game of kemari is often played by Shinto priests here.

Explore the shrine’s grounds. Marvel at its architecture. Imagine the rituals performed here for centuries. Shimogamo Shrine is more than a place of worship. It’s a living link to Japan’s rich past. It’s a vibrant part of Kyoto’s present. Feel the spirit of this ancient and enduring sanctuary.
