Wondering how Daigo-ji Temple grew into such a sprawling complex? We are standing in Shimo Daigo. It is the lower section of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Daigo-ji is a Shingon Buddhist temple. Its history spans over 1,100 years.

Daigo-ji’s story begins in 874. The monk Shobo received divine guidance. The local deity Yoko’o Daimyojin led him to a sacred well on Mt. Kami-Daigo. Shobo built a hermitage there. He installed statues of Kannon. These were Juntei Kannon and Nyoirin Kannon.

Emperors supported Daigo-ji. The temple grew in size and importance. The Yakushi Hall was built in 907. An Amitabha Hall followed in 926. The five-story pagoda was added in 951.

Emperor Daigo abdicated in 930. He became a monk at Daigo-ji. He was buried here after his death at age 46. The Daigo Minamoto family also influenced the temple. They had their sons serve as head priests.

Daigo-ji suffered fires during civil wars. Only the pagoda survived. Relics and documents were preserved. These record the temple’s history. They also show its role as head temple of the Daigo branch of Shingon Buddhism.

Shimo Daigo offers much to see. Don’t miss the five-storied pagoda. It is Kyoto’s oldest wooden structure with written proof of age. It was completed in 951. This pagoda is about 38 meters tall. The top alone is 13 meters high.

Visit Benten Hall. It sits on a small island in a picturesque lake. This is a favorite spot in autumn. The hall is dedicated to Benzaiten. She is the goddess of creativity and music.

Explore Sanbo-in sub-temple. Toyotomi Hideyoshi rebuilt it in 1598. He planned a grand cherry blossom viewing party. The pond garden has bridges, pines, and stones. Paintings inside depict animals, plants, and festivals.

Daigo-ji is also known for cherry blossoms. Toyotomi Hideyoshi planted 700 cherry trees here. He held a famous cherry blossom viewing party. This event is recreated each year in April. It features historical costumes and performances.

The Kondo Hall is the main hall of Shimo-Daigo. It houses a seated statue of Yakushi Buddha. This Medicine Buddha offers protection and healing. The Niomon Gate dates back to 1605. It was rebuilt after a fire.

Remember the UNESCO designation as you explore Shimo Daigo. The temple has 70 wooden structures. It also has 18 National Treasures of Japan. Shimo Daigo is a place of beauty and history. Take your time to appreciate its treasures.
