Why did Shiloh Church in Savannah give its name to one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War? Shiloh Church, originally Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, stood near the battleground. Founded in 1880, Shiloh Church evolved from prayer meetings under a brush arbor. Congressman John Frederick Dezendorf owned the land. He gifted it to the congregation around 1880. A wooden church was then built. The first congregation was organized on Chapel Street by Reverend Admiral Billups. Reverend Burdock Nicholas became pastor in 1884, serving for three years. Under Reverend F.P. Saunders, who arrived in 1894, the wooden structure was replaced with a brick church. Financial troubles forced Mt. Nebo to disband and reorganize as Shiloh Baptist Church. Dr. L.W.C. Metts, pastor for 13 years, helped overcome these financial struggles. Shiloh’s magnificent orchestra performed weekly concerts for the community. Dr. John Hilyer Ashby’s leadership from 1908 brought renovations, a heating system, and a pipe organ. Membership grew, and the orchestra and choir flourished. After Dr. Ashby’s resignation in 1921, several pastors led Shiloh. They included Reverend Frederick Winfield Black and Reverend V.V.K. Stokes. Dr. W.L. Hamilton’s pastorate from 1930 saw continued growth. A new baptistery and updated heating system were installed. In 1949, Shiloh moved to 745 Park Avenue. The Booker T. Washington High School band led the procession. The church quickly paid off the debt. A mortgage burning and cornerstone laying service was held in 1954. Dr. Hamilton served until his death in 1962. Reverend Dr. MacCarthy C. Southerland, an advocate for education and youth, oversaw the construction of a new educational building. He resigned in 1966 to lead the Virginia Seminary and College. Reverend Dr. John H. Foster, pastor from 1967, spearheaded renovations and community outreach. This included a radio ministry, programs for unwed mothers, a well-child health clinic, and a daycare center. Shiloh Church continued to grow and evolve under subsequent leaders. This rich history intertwines with the tragic battle that borrowed its name. The church stands as a testament to faith and resilience amidst the turmoil of war.
