Shiloh Baptist Mission Church’s story began much earlier than its current structure. The church’s origins trace back to 1872 when Reverend George Byrd founded it in the Spanish Town area. The first church building was located on Boyd Avenue. Later it moved to 14th Street.
Over the years Shiloh faced challenges. The original building was demolished and replaced. The congregation persevered. They experienced growth and hardship. They witnessed changes in pastors and community. Rev Byrd served for 34 years. He was followed by Rev Jack Mitchell. Rev Mitchell’s assistant Dudley T Smith eventually became pastor. His son Charles T Smith succeeded him. Pastor Charles T Smith served 50 years.
The church went through periods of expansion and rebuilding. A new sanctuary was constructed in 1971. The church expanded adding classrooms fellowship space and numerous ministries. This shows their dedication to their community. This new building was a monumental task. The congregation participated in a fundraising program. Their contributions reflected “equal sacrifice”. The building included a kitchen dining room pastor’s study and choir room. The first service in the new sanctuary was held in June 2001.
