Slipping through time, we find ourselves at the entrance of the Shihuadong Scenic Area. This isn’t just any cave. The Shihuadong Scenic Area, also known as Qianzhen Cave and Ten Buddha Cave, holds the distinction of being China’s first geopark centered around karst caves. Formed 70 million years ago during a period of intense earth movement, Shihuadong is a testament to the power of nature. Located in the western mountains of Fangshan District, a mere 40 kilometers from Beijing’s bustling center, Shihuadong offers a cool respite. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 13 degrees Celsius, making it a welcome escape, especially during the summer months. Shihuadong isn’t just a single cavern. It’s a layered labyrinth, with seven floors discovered so far. The first to the sixth floors are a spectacle of cave formations. The seventh floor, however, holds a secret: an underground dark river. Currently, the first four levels are open to the public. This translates to a 2,500-meter journey through 16 halls, encompassing 18 scenic areas and over 120 individual landscapes. Imagine witnessing the Dragon Palace Curtain, the Heavenly Mandarin Pillars, or the Dragon Lady Embroidery Table. These evocative names hint at the wonders within Shihuadong. The formations, sculpted by time and water, ignite the imagination. As you walk through the illuminated passages, the cool air and the echoing drips create an atmosphere of mystery. This unique underground spectacle makes Shihuadong a must-see. Remember to wear comfortable shoes, as the cave floor can be slippery. A flashlight can also enhance your experience, allowing you to fully appreciate the intricate details of the formations.
