Shifang. A name that resonates with echoes of ancient kingdoms and whispers of modern resilience. We stand before a city steeped in history, a city that has witnessed the rise and fall of dynasties, the ingenuity of ancient engineers, and the unwavering spirit of its people. Shifang, nestled in the heart of Sichuan province, just 50 kilometers from the vibrant metropolis of Chengdu, boasts a heritage stretching back over two millennia. Shifang has known many names throughout its long history. Once called Zhifang, then Meixin, and later Fangting and Fangning, each name a brushstroke in the grand tapestry of its existence. Finally, it adopted the name Shifang in 221 AD under the Kingdom of Shu, a name that has endured through centuries of change. The very ground beneath our feet has been tread upon by figures of legend. Li Bing, the Qin administrator who orchestrated the marvel of the Dujiangyan irrigation system, once resided in Shifang. This very city played a role in ensuring the prosperity of the entire region through agriculture. Some historians even believe Li Bing was a native of Shifang, adding another layer of local pride to this historical narrative. Shifang’s history is not just a collection of names and dates. It’s a living testament to human endurance. In 2008, the earth trembled, and Shifang suffered devastating damage during the Sichuan earthquake. The city mourned the loss of many lives, including schoolchildren whose classrooms crumbled beneath the force of the quake. Yet, from the rubble emerged a renewed spirit of determination, a drive to rebuild and honor the memory of those lost. Shifang also bears the scars of a more recent struggle. In 2012, students took to the streets in a powerful protest against the construction of a copper smelting plant. Their courageous stand against potential environmental damage demonstrated the fierce protectiveness the people of Shifang feel for their home. The protest ultimately led to the project being abandoned, a victory for the community and the environment. Today, Shifang is a city reborn. It is a hub of industry and innovation, boasting a rich tapestry of economic activity, from its phosphate rock mines and associated chemical industry to the natural springs that have earned it the title of “Hometown of Chinese Mineral Water”. Shifang’s legacy extends beyond its industrial pursuits. For over four centuries, the fertile lands surrounding Shifang have produced some of China’s finest tobacco, and the city has even been dubbed the “Hometown of the Chinese Cigar”. These cigars, once given as tribute to emperors and communist leaders, are now experiencing a revival. Shifang is a city of resilience, a place where the echoes of the past mingle with the dynamism of the present. As you explore its streets and mountains, remember the stories etched into its very foundations. Remember the ancient administrator, the resilient survivors, and the student protesters. Their stories are the heart and soul of Shifang.
