Look closely. Doesn’t the Shieldhall evoke a bygone era? It is a time when steamships ruled the waves. This remarkable vessel, built in 1955, has a fascinating story.

The Shieldhall’s story began on the River Clyde. The Glasgow Corporation commissioned Lobnitz & Company to build her at their Renfrew shipyard. Launched on July 7, 1955, she entered service that October.

Originally, the Shieldhall transported treated sewage sludge. It went down the River Clyde to be dumped at sea. But Shieldhall had another important role. Continuing a tradition from World War I, Glasgow’s sludge vessels offered free day trips. These were for disadvantaged families and wounded ex-servicemen. This is why the Shieldhall boasts a large saloon. It was built to accommodate up to 80 day passengers.

After 21 years of service, the Shieldhall was laid up in 1976. The Southern Water Authority purchased her in 1977. After modifications, she carried sludge from Southampton for five years. Rising fuel costs led to her withdrawal in 1985.

But the Shieldhall’s story didn’t end there. Her steam propulsion system sparked interest. A preservation society was formed. They aimed to acquire and preserve the ship. In 1988, they purchased the Shieldhall for her scrap value: £20,000.

Solent Steam Packet Limited was formed. It later became a Community Benefit Society. In 2020, the Steamship Shieldhall Charity took over. They are responsible for preserving and operating the ship. All work is done by unpaid volunteers.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has supported several projects. These include the restoration of the saloon. The Shieldhall is now a frequent sight around the Solent. She offers excursions for passengers on an historic steamship. Visitors can explore the navigation bridge and machinery spaces.

The Shieldhall has even ventured back to Glasgow. It has also been to Holland for the Dordrecht Steam Festival. This remarkable vessel has been seen on the big screen in films like Angela’s Ashes and Grimsby.

The Shieldhall boasts classic lines. She reminds us of a 1920s steamer. Her partly riveted hull and original steam engines are captivating. The Shieldhall’s trustees are committed. They want to keep her “alive and steaming” until 2050. This floating museum offers a unique glimpse into maritime history. It is a testament to the power of preservation.
