Shi Fang. The Marble Boat. A curious name, isn’t it? It sits here on the Kunming Lake in Beijing’s Summer Palace, a seemingly permanent fixture. Yet, it speaks of impermanence. Shi Fang isn’t what it appears to be. This ‘marble’ boat is actually built of wood. Then painted to give the illusion of marble. It was commissioned by the Qianlong Emperor in 1755. He intended it as a symbol of the stability of his reign. He chose the location deliberately. Kunming Lake was a place of leisure and reflection for the emperors.

Shi Fang replaced an earlier, smaller marble boat. This earlier version was commissioned by the Kangxi Emperor. But it was destroyed during the Dzungar–Qing Wars. Qianlong’s boat was meant to be grander, more resilient. It reflects his desire to project strength and continuity. Ironically, the ‘marble’ is a facade. The boat rests on a stone foundation. Its hull is made of wood. This structure makes it more practical. It also less susceptible to damage than actual marble.

The design of Shi Fang is a blend of Chinese and Western styles. The paddlewheels, hidden beneath the ‘marble’ cladding, were a nod to Western technology. Yet, the overall aesthetic, with its intricate carvings and ornate details, is distinctly Chinese. Some say the boat couldn’t actually sail. The paddlewheels were purely decorative. Others claim the paddlewheels were functional. The boat was used for leisurely cruises on the lake. Either way, Shi Fang is more than just a boat. It is a symbol. A symbol of the complexities of Qianlong’s reign. A blend of tradition and innovation, of strength and fragility.

Look closely at the carvings on the boat. You’ll see depictions of auspicious symbols. Dragons, phoenixes, and other mythical creatures. These were meant to invoke good fortune and prosperity. The name, Shi Fang, translates to “Marble Boat”. But the word “fang” can also mean “fragrant”. This double meaning connects the boat to the Summer Palace itself. Often referred to as the “Garden of Clear Ripples”. A place of beauty and tranquility. Shi Fang stands as a reminder of the impermanence of power. The illusion of permanence. It is a beautiful deception, a whimsical monument to a powerful emperor. A curious blend of East and West, of practicality and symbolism. It reminds us that even the most solid-appearing structures can be built on a foundation of something else entirely. And that even the grandest monuments can have hidden depths. As you leave Shi Fang, consider its story. A story of emperors and illusions, of marble and wood. A story reflected in the clear ripples of Kunming Lake.
